 APPALACHIAN SUMMER
Mark Elliott & Mickey Justice

Lately I've been feeling down got to leave this big old town
Get my feet back on the ground where no one knows me
Gonna' lose my cares in that sweet mountain air
And when the sun goes down

The river will sing her song to me, a midnight mountain melody
The Nightingales add harmony from their home among the branches
In the trees on the hills, by the road along the way
To a brand new day

It's an Appalachian summer on a narrow two lane road
   That winds through the mountains
Where the hills are tied in
heather'd locks
And the water flows over weathered rocks
And a gentle breeze will kiss the trees just in passing
   An Appalachian summer

The summer sky is almost gone, gotta' turn around and head for home
But I'll be back before too long, where the wind will take me
Down in the valley and up through the pines
To an old friend of mine

An Appalachian summer on a narrow two-lane road
   That winds through the mountains
Where the hills are tied in
heather'd locks
The water flows over weathered rocks
And a gentle breeze will kiss the trees just in passing
   An Appalachian summer

“ Where the hills are tied in heather locks and the water flows over weathered rocks. ”

song story

Written in 1992 with Mark's good pal, and uber-musician, Mickey Justice, after the two spend headed off to Grandfather Mountain for the Highland Games. The song was born somewhere in between the Ceili's (a traditional Scottish party,) the midnight mountainside jamming (complete with bagpipes, whistles, and way too much scotch) and the boys screaming across the beautiful Blueridge Parkway in a truck with questionable brakes. You can hear it all in this Celtic-themed summer song.
