Cradle of the Mountain
Mark Elliott & Gary Culley
I remember the Shenandoah sundown
Red and golds dancing on that Blueridge sky
The whisper of pine trees riding on the night breeze
Voices of the mountain rocked that sleepy town goodnight
Here there are asphalt fields under buildings of steel
The stars about get lost in those big city lights
This crowded avenue ain’t that dusty road I knew
Where the sidewalks were flowers and honeysuckle vines
Hold on you sweet old memory
Take me where the piney river runs
When I grow tired and weary
Won’t you rock me in the cradle of the mountain
When I was younger that mountain couldn’t hold Me
The grass was always greener on the other side
I was eighteen, I was restless. Carefree and reckless
Searching for the answers that only come with time
Hold on you sweet old memory
Take me where the piney river runs
When I grow tired and weary
Won’t you rock me in the cradle of the mountain
Hold on you sweet old memory
Take me where the piney river runs
When I grow tired and weary
Won’t you rock me in the cradle of the mountain
I remember the Shenandoah sundown
Red and golds dancing on that Blueridge sky
Repeat Chorus

“When I grow tired and weary, won’t you rock me in the cradle of the mountain.”
Song story
Massanutten is a Native American word that means both "Bread Basket" and "Cradle of the Mountain." The mountain is hook shaped, with the small village being cradled in the elbow of the mountain (the bread basket.) Mark and Gary wrote the song and recorded it for the Culley and Elliott album, "Flight of Dreams" in 1992 while on one of their many tours through the Shenandoah Valley.
